The type species (lectotype) of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia is Pseudo-nitzschia seriata (Cleve) H.Peragallo.

Type locality: "Daya Bay (22.5665N, 114.5206E), Guangdong Province, South China Sea, P. R. China."; (Li & al.: 124) Holotype: Natural History Museum of Denmark; C-A-92073 (Fig. 2 A–E, G, H) (Li & al.: 124) Notes: "Holotype: Fixed material of strain MC281 deposited at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, as C-A-92073. Fig. 2(A–E, G, H) illustrate the holotype strain. Isotypes: Permanent slide of strain MC281 deposited at the Laboratory of Phycology, College of Life Science, South China Normal University, China, catalog number PS26. Fixed material of strain MC281 deposited in the same place, as F-MC281."

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), imitating, resembling (Stearn 1973).
