Nomenclatural note
"The basionym of this species: Hormoceras nodosum Kützing, was described by Kützing (1842: 732) from the Gulf of Genoa (Italy) and Trieste (Italy); later, Kützing himself illustrated it in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1862: 20, pl. 67/a-b). The new combination in the genus Ceramium as C. nodosum has been proposed several times: by Griffiths & Harvey in Harvey (1847: pl. XC), by Zanardini (1847: 223) and by Ardissone (1875: 71); however, the combination of Griffiths & Harvey has priority over the others having been published in March 1847, while that of Zanardini, although presented as a note in the session of March 29, 1847, was published at the end of that year. Therefore because either C. nodosum (Kützing) Zanardini or C. nodosum (Kützing) Ardissone, are based on the same basionym, they are both later isonyms without nomenclatural status , according to Art. 6.3 Note 2 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), of the combination previously published by Griffiths et Harvey in Harvey (op. cit.). This species by both Hauck (1882: 104) and Ardissone (1883: 107) was listed among the synonyms of C. tenuissimum (= C. diaphanum). Later, it was no longer recorded, until Funk (1922: 241) reported it as a distinct species from the Gulf of Naples (Italy); but some years later Funk himself (Funk, 1927: 474) considered it as a synonym of C. tenuissimum (= C. diaphanum). Secilla (2012: 271) listed it among the synonyms of C. diaphanum. Recently, Wolf et al. (2019b) studying some Ceramium specimens collected in the Venice lagoon (Italy) and evaluating the original description of Hormoceras nodosum (Kützing, op. cit.), noted that the apices are straight to slightly curved and not forcipate as in C. diaphanum; moreover, since the molecular analyses carried out by themselves had confirmed the separation of the two species, they proposed the reinstatement of the binomial Ceramium nodosum (Kützing) Griffiths et Harvey. As far as we know, the presence of this species in the Mediterranean Sea is confirmed only in the Venice lagoon (Wolf et al., op. cit.). While all the previous reports, including the aforementioned one by Funk (1922: 241) from the Gulf of Naples, should be verified by molecular analysis due to the considerable overlapping of the morphological characters of C. nodosum with C. diaphanum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 209-210). - (10 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
