The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chondrus is Chondrus crispus Stackhouse.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus verrucosus Mikami.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1973).
