Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium purpurascens N.L.Gardner.

Type Information
Type locality: Palisades, Santa Monica, California; (Loomis 1949: 1) Notes: Dawson (1953: 70) notes that a holotype was not designated, but is represented by one or more specimens under Loomis 5291, June 30, 1930 in the private collection of Mrs. Nina Loomis. (Contact details are included in original reference.) Isotype preparations are on slides 1104-1105 in the herbarium of the AHF.
