The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Savoiea robusta (N.L.Gardner) M.J.Wynne
Type locality: Pt. Roberts 49N [Point Roberts, Whatcom County, Washington, USA] (Harvey 1862: 168). Holotype: David Lyall; sandy beach near low water. TCD?
