The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Callithamnion rupicola C.L.Anderson.

Type locality: 2.5 miles north of South Bluff, Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico; (Dawson 1962: 33) Holotype: 20-21 December 1949; lowermost intertidal; Herb. A. Hancock Foundation; E. Y. Dawson 8576 (Dawson 1962: 33) Notes: Dawson (1962: 33) notes that there is an isotype slide located in Herb. Beaudette Foundation.

Adjective (Latin), rigid (Stearn 1973).
