Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acrochaetium is Acrochaetium secundatum (Lyngbye) Nägeli.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema robustum (Børgesen) Huisman & Woelkerling
Type information
Type locality: St. Thomas Harbour (Silva & al. 1996: 100).

Adjective (Latin), strong growing, strong-growing, or stout.

Taxonomic notes
John et al. (2004) note that Stegenga (pers. comm.) has suggested that this species may be referable to the genus Colaconema.
Distributional notes
This species has been introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 101) being first found at Siani (Mediterranean Egypt) in 1944, which it may have reached via the Suez Canal. - (4 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry
