The type species (lectotype) of the genus Goniolithon is Goniolithon papillosum (Zanardini ex Hauck) Foslie.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pneophyllum marlothii (Heydrich) Puckree-Padua, P.W.Gabrielson, Hughey & Maneveldt.

Type locality: Champsbay, South Africa; (Woelkerling 1998: 355) Syntype fragments: collector not indicated; date not indicated; PC; unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym) (Woelkerling 1998: 355) Notes: Woelkering et al. (2005: 47) indicate that TRH has a syntype, A4-196. SOUTH AFRICA: WESTERN CAPE PROVINCE: CAMPS BAY, ON MUSSEL SHELLS; COLLECTOR: DR. MARLOTH. TYPE TRH A4-196 (LECTOTYPE DESIGNATED BY PUCKREE-PADUA et al., 2020: 1629; see Printz 1929: pl. LV, fig. 4).
