This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptophytum laeve Adey
Holotype locality: Eyrarbakki, Iceland (Adey, Athanasiadis & Lebednik 2001: 192). Holotype: G. Strömfelt’; 4 September 1883; on intertidal rocks and pebbles. S (Adey, Athanasiadis & Lebednik 2001: 192). Notes: A single slide annotated ‘Lithophyl. laeve n. sp. Sporangia Eyr... på sten in fjâre 4/9 83 G. Strömfelt’.

Adjective (Latin), smooth, free from uneveness, hairs or roughness (Stearn 1973).

Basionym not cited (INA). According to Woelkering et al. (2005: 250), "originally described as Lithophyllum laeve (Strömfelt 1886: 21) (a later homonym of Lithophyllum laeve Kützing 1847: 33), but then (Foslie 1891a:44) reduced to the rank of form and treated as Lithophyllum lenormandii f. laeve, and then (Foslie 1898b: 7) re-elevated to the rank of species and transferred into Lithothamnion, as Lithothamnion laeve, where Foslie retained it in publication]." - (22 Mar 2012) - Wendy Guiry
