Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota fasciola var. repens (J.Agardh) Ardissone.

Type locality: "Prope St. Hospice Niceae" (St. Hospice, Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, France); (Agardh 1842: 38) Lectotype: LD; 49523 (De Clerck 2003: 176) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that lectotypification was established by Nizamuddin (1981: 59).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1973).
