Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Agarophyton is Agarophyton chilense (C.J.Bird, McLachlan et E.C.Oliveira) Gurgel, J.N.Norris et Fredericq.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria transtasmanica (M.Preuss, N.Muangmai and Zuccarello) G. M.Lyra, C.Iha, J.M.C.Nunes, C.C.Davis.

Type locality: 39°56'44.5"S, 174°59'50.8"E, Whanganui River mouth, Whanganui, North Island, New Zealand; (Preuss et al. 2020: 240) Holotype (male gametophyte): M.Preuss and G.C. Zuccarello; 18 December 2018; WELT; A033798 (Preuss et al. 2020: 240, fig. 3) Notes: Isotype: WELT A033797, female gametophyte (fig. 4).
