Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ellisius is Ellisius coccinea (Hudson) S.F.Gray.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra neglecta f. fuellebornii (Schmidle) V.Poljansky.

Type Information
(Dixon & Price 1981: 138) Notes: Comments: E. glaber is a superfluous and illegitimate name, in that Conferva arbuscula Dillw. is cited as a synonym (Gray, 1821: 333). The genus Ellisius was established with two species, E. glaber and E. coccineus, the latter based on Conferva cocccinea Hudson{=Heterosiphonia plumosa (Ellis)Batters}. Heterosiphonia Montagne (1942) has been conserved against Ellisius.

Adjective A (Latin), glabrous, smooth (Stearn 1973).
