Type locality: Santa Monica, California, U.S.A. (Womersley 1994: 50). Holotype: epiphytic on Ectocarpus sp. (epitype) M.G. Fowler; UC 276666 (Drew 1928: 166).

Adjective (Latin), simple, undivided, unbranched, of one piece or series, not consisting of several distinct parts (Stearn 1973).

Garbary (1987: 172) lists the basionym of this species as Rhodochorton simplex Drew (1928). According to South & Skelton (2003), Rhodochorton simplex Drew 1928 and Audouinella thuretii (Bornet ) Woelkerling 1971 are synonyms of this species.
