The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium serra (S.G.Gmelin) E.Taskin & M.J.Wynne.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1973).
