The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptosiphonia fibrillosa (Agardh) Savoie & G.W.Saunders
Type locality: On Polyides rotundus at Torquay: Mrs Griffiths (Index Nominum Algarum).
Named for Mrs Amelia Warren Griffiths (1768-1858), a seaweed collector and correspondent from Torquay, Devon, England.
