The type species (lectotype) of the genus Galaxaura is Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Galaxaura apiculata Kjellman.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
