Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Litosiphon is Litosiphon pusillus (Carmichael) Harvey.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachynema groenlandicum (S.Lund) P.M.Pedersen.

Holotype locality: Masuichi in Muroran, Hokkaido ; (Kawai & Kurogi 1983: 36) Holotype: Hiroshi Kawai; 31 May 1980; SAP; 035665 (Kawai & Kurogi 1983: 36) Notes: Holotype: Plurilocular sporangial.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), from or pertaining to Greenland.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Plant filiform, simple, up to 8 mm (40 mm in culture) in length, 175-400 microns in diameter; thallus composed of 1-2 layers of peripheral cells 30-50 microns in length and 20-45 microns in diameter and several large medullary cells 63-93 x 45-88 microns in size; hairs present, 13-18 microns in diameter, with multiseriate loculi of 5-7 x 4-7 microns in size; unilocular sporangia unknown.
