The type species (lectotype) of the genus Dumontia is Dumontia incrassata (O.F.Müller) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type information
Type locality: Îles Malouines [Falkland Islands] (Dumont d'Urville 1825: 22). Holotype: PC ? (Huisman & Womersley 2006: 91). Notes: Huisman & Womersley (2006: 91) note that the holotype is presumably in PC, but cannot presently be located (B. de Reviers, pers. comm., 9 May 2006). Fragments in LD (Herb. Agardh 32591)

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1985).
