The type species (lectotype) of the genus Grateloupia is Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Grateloupia subpectinata Holmes

Type locality: Farm Cove, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (Gepp & Gepp 1906: 259). Holotype: Lucas nr. 6; July 1901; BM 530322 (De Clerck et al. 2005: 405).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fern-like (Stearn 1973).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Confined largely to the vicinity of harbours and sheltered coasts, where it can occur in abundance in shallow water or just above low tide level (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 201). Epilithic, in lower littoral lagoons, harbours, estuaries in sheltered running water, sublittoral to 6 m; tolerant of periodic salinity variation from 12 to 37‰ (Irvine & Farnham 1983: 27).
