Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herpodiscus multiplex (Womersley) Draisma, Prud'homme & H.Kawai.

Type locality: Sarge Bay, east side of Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 576) Holotype: Woelkerling; 16 November 1968; on Platythalia angustifolia, drift; ADU; A34204 (Womersley 1987: 152) Notes: Womersley (1987) notes that there are isotypes distributed in "Marine Algae of southern Australia" No. 240.
