The type species (holotype) of the genus Iridaea is Iridaea cordata (Turner) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sarcothalia dichotoma (Hooker f.) Leister.

Adjective (Latin), toothed, usually with sharp teeth pointing outwards (Stearn 1973).
