The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type locality: "Im Indischen Ocean" (Tranquebar, Tamil Nadu, India) (Silva & al. 1996: 661). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Grunow (1915: 374) for more information on the type locality of this species.

Adjective (Latin), capillary, hair-like, thread-like (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996: 662) two taxa (Sargassum tenue var. fuscescens Grunow and Sargassum tenue var. gardneri Grunow) which apparently lie within the circumspection of this species, have not been cited subsequent to their proposal. See Lipkin & Silva (2002: 51).
