The type species (lectotype) of the genus Peyssonnelia is Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.

Type locality: Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico (Silva & al. 1996: 211). Holotype: Dawson; Dec. 18, 1949; HAHF Dawson 8349, in box 56275, in vial 2352, and on slides 1882-1887 (Dawson 1953: 103). Notes: Dawson (1953: 103) cites type locality as outer margin of reef at extreme south tip of Isla Guadalupe, Baja California.
