The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota friabilis Setchell.

Syntype localities: Timor and Daram Islet, east coast of Misoöl Island, Indonesia; (Silva & al. 1996: 586) Lectotype: L; 936.74-100A (De Clerck 2003: 165) Notes: According to De Clerck (2003), the type loclality is Daram Islet, Misoöl Islands, Indonesia.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), Of (from) Ceylon, an island in the Indian Ocean off southern India (cf. ceylonensis & ceylonicus).
