The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota flabellata (Collins) Setchell & N.L.Gardner.

Type locality: Isla Tortuga, Baja California Sur, Mexico; (Silva & al. 1996: 593) Type: Ivan M. Johnston; June; Growing on rocks in the lower littoral and upper sublittoral belts; Herb. Calif. Acad. Sci.; 1338 (Scott 1883: 731) Notes: According to De Clerck (2003), the type is located at UC (CAS 1338).
