Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Stoechospermum marginatum (C.Agardh) Kützing.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "in mari Indico"; Cape of Good Hope, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 610) Lectotype: LD; 48509 (De Clerck 2003: 185) Notes: According to De Clerck (2003), the type locality is [in mari indica, ad oras Hindoestaniae] India. He notes that De Clerck & Coppejans (1997) lectotypified this taxon.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), spotted, blotched (Stearn 1973).
