The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: Hauula Beach Park, Oahu, Hawaii; (Hoyle 1994: 86) Holotype: G. A. Santos; May 13 1980; Fringing reef, attached to the limestone substratum among Laurencia parvipapillata Tseng, Rhodymenia leptophylloides Dawson and Amansia glomerata C. Agardh and underneath Sargassum sp. and entangled Ulva reticulata Forsskal; BISH; Doty 28976 (Hoyle 1994: 85) Notes: Hoyle (1994) notes that the holotype sheet contains the following specimens: one is spermatangial, three are cystocarpic, one is tetrasporangial and three are sterile. An isotype is deposited at UC. There are also syntypes deposited at BISH and UC.
