Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla (Sonder) Verlaque, Huisman & Procaccini

No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.

Taxonomic notes
According to Turan et al. (2011: 380), C. distichophylla closely resembles C. taxifolia. They note that molecular data have corroborated the morphological similarities and suggest that C. distichophylla is a brittle form of C. taxifolia (Fama et al., 2002; Stam et al., 2006). - (1 Nov 2012) - Wendy Guiry

This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 818). Holotype: Preiss; MEL 503814 (Womersley 1984: 258). Notes: According to Womersley (1984:258) the type locality is probably near Fremantle.
