The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Type locality: Isla Guadalupe, México; (Setchell & Gardner 1930: 162) Holotype: H.L. Mason No. 35; April 1925; Growing on Codium sp.; CAS; 173641 (Setchell & Gardner 1930: 162) Notes: Huisman (2018: 565) notes that: "W.A.Setchell & N.L.Gardner (op. cit. 111) stated that Mason communicated to them that the collections came from the vicinity of South Bay, which was visited by the expediton on 20 April."
