The type species (holotype) of the genus Enteromorpha is Enteromorpha intestinalis (Linnaeus) Nees.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulva clathrata (Roth) C.Agardh

Type locality: Fehmarn, SW Baltic (Berger & al. 2003: 288). Neotype: LD 137737 (Berger & al. 2003: 288). Notes: Original material missing (Blomster et al., 1999; Hayden et al., 2003). Heyden et al. (2003: 288, table 4) select a neotype illustrated in Bliding (1963: figs 69a, b) from Landskoma, Baltic Oresund.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), latticed or pierced with openings like a grating or trellis (Stearn 1973).
