The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Osmundea pelagiensis G.Furnari.

Type Information
Holotype locality: Lampedusa Islands, Pelagean Islands, Italy; (Cormaci, Furnari & Serio 1994: 366) Holotype: 23 June 1991; lower mid-littoral; CAT; 1234 (Cormaci, Furnari & Serio 1994: 366) Notes: Holotype consists of male and female gametophytes and tetrasporophyte. The specific epithet refers to the name of the Pelagean Islands where the species is distributed (Cormaci et al., 1994).
