The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia pendula (E.Y.Daywson) J.E.Sutherland, L.E.Aguilar-Rosas & R.Aguilar-Rosas.

Type locality: Isla Partida, Gulf of California, Mexico; Holotype: Feb. 22, 1946; On shaded cliff rocks in the spray zone, growing with Porphyra thuretii; AHF; 4117 (Dawson slide 878, vial 1635) Notes: Holotype: AHFH 4117 in UC, collected by E.Y.Dawson (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1144).
