The type species (lectotype) of the genus Peyssonnelia is Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.

Type locality: Isla Clarión, Islas Revilla Gigedo, Mexico; (Taylor 1945: 168) Holotype: W.R. Taylor no. 34-74c; 5 Jan 1934; Hancock Foundation; (Taylor 1945: 168) Notes: According to Dawson (1953: 109) the type was in box 3620 in the Allan Hancock Foundation Herbarium, now transferred to the Los Angeles Museum. Type: no. 34-74C on fragments of coralline algae dredged at 56 metres’ depth at sta. 134 off I. Clarion, 5 Jan. 1934; ibid., sta.137 at 103 metres’ depth, no. 34-68, 5 Jan. 1934 (Taylor, 1945).
