Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Clathromorphum circumscriptum (Strömfelt) Foslie.

Type locality: Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 495) Holotype: F.S. Collins collection C; iv.1889; just below low water mark; TRH; C21-3518 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 495) Notes: Lectotype: TRH C21-3518, iv.1889, leg. F.S. Collins, designated by Woelkerling 1993:87 (Peña et al., 2021: 6). [collected by Foslie from Mastervik, Malangen, Norway (syntype)].

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), vanishing, passing away, quickly disappearing or fadin, lasing only a short time (Stearn 1973).
