Type locality: Inderøen, Strømmen, Trondheimsfjord, Norway (Woelkerling 1998: 334). Lectotype: M. Foslie; 12.viii.1893; TRH unnumbered, includes slide 215; designated by Woelkerling, 1993: 52 (Woelkerling 1998: 334). Notes: Isolectotypes: PC, Foslie no. 25, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (box collection, filed under Lithothamnion coalescens; BM, algal box collection 429. Lectotype: TRH C21-3503; 12.viii.1893, leg. unknown (Peña et al., 2021: 6). Lectotype: GenBank MW564561 and MW536929.

Origin of species name
Participle (Latin), uniting together by growth (Stearn 1973).
