Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon investiens Foslie
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.
Type information
Type locality: Lyngø [now Lyngøya] ved [= near] Tromsø, Norway (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 523). Holotype: M. Foslie; 12.vi.1892; collection depth: 5-6 fathoms. TRH C26-3786 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 523).
