Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lophosiphonia hemisphaerica (Areschoug) Díaz-Tapia.

Type Information
Type locality: "... ab Cel. J. Agardh et a me relate est plants quaedam Bahusiensis, quam in Algis Scand. exs. ed. 1 sub n:o 60 et in ed. 2 sub n:o 67 distribuimus." [Brandskären, Koster, Bohuslän, Sweden]; (Areschoug 1871: 326, adnot.) Notes: “Polysiphonia pulvinata Aresch. Alg. scand. exs. ed. 1 No.60 and ed. 2 No. 67” (Athanasiadis, 1996: 124).

Adjective A (Latin), half spherical.
