Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia stricta (Mertens ex Dillwyn) Greville

Adjective A (Greek), urceolate; like a small jug or pitcher.

Nomenclatural notes
Kylin’s concept was explicitly based on P. pulvinata sensu J.Agardh (1863). Polysiphonia urceolata f. pulvinata Kylin is to be accepted as a new taxon, with a type: to be selected from Agardh’s (1863: 957, excl. syn.) specimens of P. pulvinata from Kattegat (ICBN, art. 58.1) (Athanasiadis, 1996).
