Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Titanoderma trochanter (Bory) Benhissoune, Boudouresque, Perret-Boudouresque & Verlaque
Nullipora trochanter Bory
Type locality: Greece (Woelkerling 1998: 385). Lectotype: collector not indicated; date not indicated; PC unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym) (Woelkerling 1998: 385). Notes: Isolectotypes: PC, unnumbered, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (box collection, filed under Goniolithon byssoides); PC, unnumbered, General Herbarium (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet affixed to a herbarium sheet); TRH, unnumbered, includes slide 526.
"the specific epithet honours Dr Woelkerling for his significant contribution to the knowledge of Corallinales."
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
The combination Lithophyllum trochanter proposed by Huvé (1963: 150), is invalid since the basionym was not cited (Art. 33.2 of I.C.B.N., Greuter et al., 1994). Woelkerling (1998: 259) validated the combination.
According to Babbini & Bressan (1997) this species is a synonym of Titanoderma byssoides var. trochanter (Bory) Babbini & Bressan. Furnari et al. (2003) note that Goniolithon byssoides (Lamarck) Foslie, Titanoderma byssoides (Lamarck) Chamberlain & Woelkerling and Lithothamnion byssoides (Lamarck) Philippi are homotypic synonyms of Lithophyllum byssoides, a species distinct from L. trochanter. However, they consider that Italian records with the specific epithet “byssoides” published before Wolkerling’s (1998) paper, should be referred to L. trochanter.
This is a marine species.
