The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callophyllis is Callophyllis variegata (Bory) Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Austrophyllis alcicornis (J.Agardh) Womersley & R.E.Norris.
Type Information
Type locality: Ad Novam Hollandiam australem et occidentalem; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Womersley & Norris (1971: 30) note that Austrophyllis alcicornis is similar to narrow and slender specimens of Callophyllis coccinea and was first distinguished as var. crinalis of C. coccinea by Harvey on specimens from Western Port, Victoria and by J. Agardh (1876: 234).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1973).
