Taxonomic note
"This species was described by Schiffner in Schiffner & Vatova (1937: 165 or p. 241 in the 1938 ed., Algae tab. XXXI/1-2) from Val Morosina (Venice, Italy). It should be noted that Schiffner himself (op. cit.), after highlighting some differences between his species and two other species of Ceramium very similar to it, stated: '...Since these differences are not always constant, it would be justified to put C vatovae (and C. catenula [(Kützing) Ardissone]) together with C. radiculosum Grunow [ex Hauck]. Especially since C. radiculosum is a fresh or brackish water plant, like C. vatovae'. After its description, this species was no longer reported. Furnari et al. (1999: 120) list it among taxa inquirenda." Cormaci & al. (2023: 160). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
