The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulacanthus ustulatus (Mertens ex Turner) Kützing

Type information
Lectotype locality: Cádiz, Spain (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 282). Type: Clemente; BM-K (Athanasiadis 1996: 60). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Searles (1968: 46, pl. 10a) who selected Cádiz as the type locality. Turner reported seeing specimens from Clemente (Cádiz) and the Mediterranean (Dr Mohr)
