Adjective (Latin), divaricate, spreading at a wide angle (Stearn 1973).

Illegitimate: later homonym of Sphaerococcus divaricatus C.Agardh, 1817. Rgarding problems concerning this name and Hypnea rissoana, see note in Furnari et al. (1999: 42).
This is a marine species.
Syntype localities: Ad Tergestum, praecipue in salinis, ad Venetiam [Trieste and Venice] (Agardh 1827: 645).
