Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caespitosa (Kylin) Santelices.

Type locality: Isipingo Beach, near Durban, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 144)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), growing in patches or tufts, caespitose (Stearn 1973).
