Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Monostroma is Monostroma bullosum (Roth) Thuret.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Enteromorpha grevillei Thuret

Type information
Type locality: A locality is not specified. (Thuret 1854: 25). Lectotype: PC (Burrows 1991 Notes: The type locality is Finistère, Bretagne, France according to Burrows (1991).

Named for Robert Kaye Greville (1794-1866), Scottish botanist and phycologist.

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Enteromorpha grevillei Thuret 1854
Ulva grevillei (Thuret) Le Jolis 1863
Ulvopsis grevillei (Thuret) Gayral 1964

Distributional notes
Samples identified as Monostroma grevillei by Saunders & Kucera (2010) segregated into two clusters M. grevillei sp.1 and M. grevillei sp. 2 (neither matching Gayralia oxyspemum rbcL sequence). This suggests the presence of cryptic species within Monostroma grevillei in the northwest Atlantic. - (15 Apr 2013) - Wendy Guiry

According to Graham et al. (2015), this is known from freshwater; they record it from Lake Mendota in Wisconsin. - (7 Aug 2015) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.
