This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Betaphycus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Betaphycus gelatinus (Esper) Doty ex P.C.Silva.

Type Information
Holotype locality: Eastern Sorsogon Province, Philippines; (Silva & al. 1996: 919) Holotype: Doty 33052; BISH; 636-903 (Silva & al. 1996: 919) Notes: Doty (1995: 239) notes that the type material is a preparation consisting of four herbarium sheets, each bearing fronds selected from about 5 kg of dried thalli obtained from eastern Sorsogon Province, Philippines, in October and November 1987. Cystocarpic and tetrasporic material. Isotypes in BISH and MELU.
