The type species (lectotype) of the genus Plectonema is Plectonema tomasinianum Bornet ex Gomont.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptolyngbya terebrans (Bornet & Flahault ex Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek.

Lectotype locality: Nièvre, France; (Silva & al. 1996: 63) Notes: This type locality was first described by Drouet (1968: 43) (Silva et al., 1996)
