Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Neosiphonia.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus flavimarinus (M.-S.Kim & I.K.Lee) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Type Information
Bangpo, Anmyondo, the western coast of Korea (36°31'N, 126°17'E)3; (Kim & Lee 1999: 273) Holotype: female plant with cystocarps: 17 August, 1988; rocky intertidal zone; SNU; IBA001 (Kim & Lee 1999: 273, fig. 1) Notes: 30 isotypes collected.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Plants 4-5 cm, attached by unicellular rhizoids arising at irregular intervals, as outgrowths from centre of lower pericentral cells, cut off by cross wall; branches alternate, profuse, dense, with distinct or indistinct main axes, 100-170 µm in diameter, shorter than broad ujpwards; ultimate branchlets abundant, short, obtuse, spur-like in several orders, exogenous or rarely cicatrigenous; pericentral cells four, with several cortical filaments extending longitudinally along junctures of pericentral cells in main axes; trichoblasts numerous, delicate, arising at regular intervals, formed once or twice, up to 100-150 µm long, deciduous, often leaving conspicuous scar-cells; branches not associated with trichoblasts in origin; tetrasporangia up to 70 µm in diameter, spirally arranged in 1.4 divergence, somewhat bulging at tip; cystocarps ovoid-globose, sessile, 300-400 µm in diameter; spermatangial branches arising from one fork of trichoblast, 100-170 µm x 35-40 µm with one to two short cells in sterile tip
