The type species (holotype) of the genus Chaetangium is Chaetangium ornatum (Linnaeus) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nothogenia ovalis (Suhr) P.G.Parkinson.

Type locality: "Cap der guten Hoffnung, von Drège" [Cape of Good Hope, collected by von Drège]; (Suhr 1840: 274) Notes: According to Drège (1841: 111, 180) as "Dumnotia auricula Suhr" (a nomen nudum) was collected at Tafelbaai, bei der Stadt und auf Paardeneiland, Mai, Juni. [Table Bay, South Africa].
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
