The type species (holotype) of the genus Phyllona is Phyllona umbilicata J.Hill.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia tenera (Kjellman) N.Kikuchi, M.Miyata, M.S.Hwang & H.G.Choi.

Type Information
Type locality: "Japan"; (Silva & al. 1996: 93) Lectotype: S; (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1145) Notes: Syntype in UPS. Kurogi lectotypified the species with a specimen in S in 1985 (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1145).

Adjective (Latin), soft, delicate (Brown 1946).
